Wendel married Christina Pedersen on August 20, 1977 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He graduated from Waterloo Central High School in 1974. Wendel retired from Wonder Bread after 32 years and has recently enjoyed working as a handyman at A-to-Z Daycare. He is survived by his wife, Christina of Waterloo; three daughters: Carrie (Mike) Wendel‑Hummell of Lawrence, Kansas, Marie (Chris) Heidemann of Juneau, Alaska, and Ellie Jo (Eli) Fulks of Waterloo; six grandchildren: Jazlyn Elizabeth, Jula Rose, Lydia Jane, Eathin Lowell, Molly Therese, and Exavier Wendel; his mother, Della Wendel of Charles City, Iowa; two brothers: Clifford (Susan) Wendel of Newton, Iowa and Michael (Kim) Wendel of Charles City, a sister, Roxanna Wendel of Sydney, Iowa; his father-in-law, Alvin Pedersen of Cedar Falls; and kin Jennifer Becker, Levi Becker and their children.

Dennis was a kind and caring man, a wonderful father, and could make anyone laugh. He and Chris were foster parents to countless children through the years. Wendel was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hiking, canoeing, camping and wildlife. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, friends, and pets.
