Biography--

Doris "Jean" Brand, 92, of Waterloo, died at Cedar Valley Hospice Home on Thursday, February 12, 2015, of natural causes.

Jean was born on June 14, 1922 in Waterloo, the daughter of William and Helen Cheever Nissen. She married Merle A. Brand, Sr. on July 14, 1940 in Waterloo; he died April 1, 1989.

Jean retired from Eagles Grocery store where she worked in the meat department. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

Jean was known as the “Cookie Grandma” by many as she enjoyed baking and sharing her cookies. Jean and Merle loved to travel and they had toured 49 states and several countries.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandie J. (Roger) Nunemaker of Waterloo and Linda (Don) Freet of Gilbertville; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Jean was preceded in death by: her husband; a son, Merle A. Brand Jr.; two great‑granddaughters; and a sister, Beverly Minard.
