Biography--

Alice Marie Greenley, 93, died on Friday, October 2, 2015, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born on March 27, 1922, in Independence, daughter of Robert J. and Leota P. (Norton) Williamson. She married Vic Greenley on January 10, 1941, in Independence.

Alice and Vic started out their marriage farming in Jesup and Independence. Alice provided a significant portion of their “start-up” funds for livestock from her savings from working at the Old Mill Ice Cream Shop in Independence. They moved to Waterloo in 1950 to begin a farm implement dealership. That business expanded to a machinery and parts distributorship and later Christmas tree growing and wholesaling. They moved to Coloma, Wisconsin, in 1975 to better manage their Christmas tree business. They returned to Waterloo in 1994 where they resided together until Vic’s death in 2001. Alice continued to reside alone in their home until 2012 when she moved to Ridgeway Place.

Alice was a loving and devoted mother. She provided her children with a great example of humility and self-sacrifice. She possessed great moral, spiritual, and physical strength. She had a quick wit and delighted many with her clever puns and word play. Her cooking ability was enjoyed by all who had the opportunity to experience her hospitality. In her final days she continued to offer food and drink even though unable to leave her bed.

Alice is survived by one daughter, Carol (Mike) Papenthien of Waterloo; three sons: Larry (Rosalie) Greenley of Appleton, Wisconsin, Bill (Lynn) of Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, and Ron (Liza) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and by ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband; a granddaughter, Emily Greenley; and by two sisters, Elma Sprague and Marian Bird.
