Robert “Bob” Louis Destival

December 25, 1919 - December 13, 2014

Robert “Bob” Louis Destival was born in Oelwein, Iowa, on December 25, 1919, son of Victor and Alma (Hoffman) Destival. He was a graduate of Hazleton High School and entered the United States Army in World War II serving from 1941–1945.

He was married to Jean Padget and they had two children together. Jean passed away in 1982. Bob worked for Rath Packing as a Foreman retiring after 41 years. He met Velva Butts and the two married on August 13, 1983 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Bob enjoyed golfing (with a lifetime achievement of 3 holes-in-one), baseball, hunting, fishing and bowling (scoring one perfect 300 point game) and was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. He was also a member of Waterloo AmVets Post 19.

Bob passed away at Friendship Village Retirement Center in Waterloo on Saturday, 12/13/14 at the age of 94 years – he would have celebrated his 95th birthday on Christmas Day!

He is survived by his wife, Velva; son, James Destival of Pinehurst, NC; daughter, Vicky (Jerome) Haggerty of Savannah, GA; a step-son, Roger (Cyndy) Butts of Traer; two step-daughters: Karen (Dennis) Mann of West Des Moines, and Kaye (Larry) Smith of Ankeny; a sister, Roberta Bishop of Manitowoc, WI; four grandchildren: Shauna (Philip) Kucera, Ryan (Mabel) Haggerty, Meghan (Michael) Murphy and Nancy Destival; six step-grandchildren: Terri (Scott Shields) Flynn, Michael (Alicia) Mann, Thomas (Cindy) Gurwell, Randall (Nyla) Gurwell, Heather (Ryan) Brubaker, and Meredith (Thad) Espenscheid; 4 great-grandchildren; and 13 step great-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean; and two sisters, Elaine Steven and Norma Destival. Bob will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
