Marie Elizabeth Stoakes, 100, of Traer, Iowa, died Saturday Dec. 20, at NewAldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She was born May 11, 1914 on a farm in Homer Township, Benton County, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Clara Holtz. At birth, she was two pounds two ounces and her first crib was a shoebox. Marie attended Dysart schools, graduating in 1932, and Drake University for one year and six weeks, until an auto accident, resulting in injuries, including a broken neck, interrupted her education. After recovering, she carried on a normal life, and married Merle D. Stoakes June 5, 1934.

Merle and Marie moved to a farm Northeast of Traer and farmed for three years, then farmed for another 30 years on the Stoakes homestead before building a house in Dysart where they ran the meat department in Baker’s Grocery Store. In 1966, they moved to Traer, and operated the Meat Market there until retiring in 1975. They belonged to Ripley United Church of Christ, after transferring from Dysart United Church of Christ in 1966.

Marie enjoyed gardening and fishing trips to Minnesota. She and her brothers sang for many programs in Dysart and other cities.

She is survived by a son, Joseph (Jean) Stoakes of Kerrville, Texas; two grandsons, Stephen (Luann) Stoakes, and Martin (Amy) Stoakes, both of Waterloo; four great-grandchildren: Lucas, Carly, Charles, and Trenton; and three great-great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Payton, and Max.

Preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; two brothers, Earl and Ralph; and a grandson, Scott.
