Mattie Mae Cutwright was born July 12, 1925, in Stamps, Arkansas, daughter of Paul and Sallie (Gaither) Johnson. She married Louis Cutwright, Sr. on February 1, 1942 in Camden, Arkansas, and they moved to Des Moines, Iowa where they raised their children. Mattie loved cooking and spent a lifetime sharing this talent with family and friends.

She catered meals for many and spent sixteen years as cook for Robert Ray while he was governor of the State of Iowa! Governor Ray appointed Mattie to the Friendship Force which gave her a love of travel leading her to Israel, Russia, Hawaii and Ireland. She and Louis travelled, too, from New Orleans to Canada and New York to California. In her free time she enjoyed learning new skills such as sewing, needlepoint and crocheting, which she loved teaching to her daughters. She and Louis enjoyed time together fishing, gardening and flowers (particularly roses, hibiscus, orchids and African violets).

Mattie passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Windsor Care Nursing & Rehab in Cedar Falls at the age of 89 years.

She is survived by two sons, Louis (Patricia) Cutwright of Waterloo and Charles (Ruth) Cutwright of Tennessee; two daughters Opal (Walter) Graves of Omaha, Nebraska, and Jo Ann (John) Mercer of Houston, TX; three young men who Mattie & Louis nurtured: Robert, Larry and Harmon; one brother, John D. Johnson of Des Moines; three sisters, Thresser Edwards of Des Moines, Mary (Sylvester) McCracken of Des Moines, and Elizabeth Limbrick of California; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Mattie was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 65 years, Louis Cutwright, Sr., three sons, Ronald & Donald Cutwright (twins who died in infancy) and Steven Cutwright; a daughter, Shirley Cutwright, a sister, Jessie Martin; and two brothers, Paul Johnson, Jr. and James Johnson. Mattie will be remembered for her beauty – inside and out.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
