Bessie Leola (Howe) Mokosak

May 29, 1918 - March 6, 2015

Bessie Leola (Howe) Mokosak was born May 29, 1918, daughter of Charles and Bertha (Pierce) Howe in Fredericksburg, Iowa. She grew up on the farm with her five brothers and five sisters. She met Frank Joseph Mokosak when he worked as a hired farm hand for their neighbors. The two were married on September 20, 1937 in New Hampton, Iowa. The couple moved to Waterloo where they had three children. Frank passed away in 1958 so Bessie learned how to drive and began working at Walker’s Odd Lot in addition to single parenting their youngest child. Bessie enjoyed sewing quilts in her younger years and word find books in her later years.

Bessie passed away on Friday, March 6, 2015 at the Denver Sunset Home in Denver, Iowa at the age of 96 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Nancy Adams; son-in-law James Eighmey; daughter-in-law Carol Mokosak; a grandson William Eighmey; a granddaughter Lisa Eighmey; and her brothers and sisters.

Bessie is survived by her daughter Barb Eighmey of Iowa Falls; son, Richard (Janet) Mokosak of Waterloo; son-in-law A.J. Adams of El Paso, Texas; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great grandchildren as well as numerous extended family and friends. Bessie will be remembered for her spunk and her sweet tooth.
