Patrick Allen Barfels was born in Waterloo, Iowa on January 13, 1970, son of Darrell and Sally (Peterson) Barfels. He graduated from Expo High School in 1988. Patrick attended Kirkwood Community College receiving his Associates Degrees in General Studies.

He married Jennifer Richter and they had one son, Eric. The couple later divorced. Patrick married Lisa Corson O’Connell on June 16, 2007 in Waterloo. He was a supervisor at Midwest Metal Products in Cedar Rapids for many years and then became the Plant Manager at Tipton Structural Fabrication in Tipton, IA.

Don Redfern was Patrick’s Big Brother growing up and had a special influence on his life which led to his involvement with the Big Brother/Big Sisters program. Patrick loved football, especially the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed wood carving, staying busy and had a love for shoes. He loved spending time with family and friends, and most of all, his granddaughter Ariana.

Patrick passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2015, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids at the age of 45 years. He is survived by his wife Lisa; his father Darrell (Candy) Barfels of Littleton; mother Sally Hoppenworth of Newton; son Eric (Danica) Barfels of Jesup; a granddaughter Ariana Barfels of Jesup; two step-daughters Megan (Warren) Ripley of Mililani, HI, and Elizabeth O’Connell of Waterloo; two brothers Brad Barfels of Des Moines and David Barfels of Waterloo; and 1 sister Andrea (Clint) Gotta of Newton.

Memorials may be directed to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa.
