Charles “Chuck” Edward Essmann was born August 27, 1922 in Waterloo, Iowa, son of Louie and Emma (Schellhorn) Essmann. He graduated from East High School in Waterloo in 1940. Charles married Maxine Louise (Hughes) on April 30, 1942. He worked at Rath Packing Company for a short time before joining the United States Navy, serving in World War II. Chuck worked at John Deere as a General Supervisor until his retirement in 1982.

He and Maxine enjoyed wintering in Brownsville, Texas. Chuck was involved in many positions at First Lutheran Church and joined Ascension Lutheran in 1993. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Waterloo for nearly 70 years as well as a member of the American Legion Post #138. Chuck lived at Windhaven Assisted Living since it opened in 2006 and volunteered in many capacities from delivering mail to leading games of BINGO. In 2014 he was awarded the Governors Volunteer Award.

Chuck passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Windhaven Assisted Living at the age of 93 years from natural causes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maxine; son, Larry Essmann; an infant grandson; two brothers, Ervin and Kenneth Essmann; five sisters: Amanda Essmann, Marinna Bruns, Ann Foutch, Roseanna Van Syoc and Erna Galbraith.

Chuck is survived by his son, Charles (Trudy) Essmann II of Waterloo; four grandchildren: Adrienne Essmann of Austin, Texas, Jebediah Essmann of South Carolina, Troy (Kathleen) Essmann of Cedar Rapids, and Christina (Christopher) Paulsen of McPherson, Kansas; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Louis Essmann of Waterloo; a son-in-law, Ronnie Schoenhut; and a special friend, Betty Essmann.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to either Ascension Lutheran Church or Western Home Communities.
