Shirley M. Burman (1927-2015)

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA - Shirley Mae Burman, 88, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, June 28, 2015 at the Western Home Communities Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center, from complications from Alzheimer’s.

She was born May 2, 1927 in Janesville, Iowa, daughter of Charles and Myrtle Huber. She married Wallace Burman on April 11, 1947 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Waverly.

She graduated from Janesville High School and attended Gates Business College. She worked as a secretary for both J.S. Latta & Sons and Wagner Manufacturing. She taught piano and organ lessons from her home for many years. A member of St. John Lutheran Church, she was a preschool Sunday School teacher and worked with the St. John women’s group in preparing food and serving for funeral and wedding receptions.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Karen (Jim) Nicholas of Albuquerque, NM, and Karol (Craig) Sturm of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Heather (Jeff) Meyer, Thad (Erin) Sturm, and Matt Nicholas; three great grandchildren, Avery and Josie Meyer, Corbin Sturm; and three sisters-in-law, Kathryn Walker of Dunkerton, Billye Burman of Bartlesville, OK, and Lolita Huber of Janesville.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne and Deane Huber.

Services: Friday at St. John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Service, and also for one hour prior to services Friday at the church. Burial will be Monday in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Alzheimer’s Association (East Central Iowa Chapter, 317 7th Ave SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401).
