Obituary for John Walter Sorensen

WATERLOO, IOWA - John W. Sorensen, 79, of Western Home Communities-Windgrace in Cedar Falls, died Friday, August 14, 2015 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

He was born April 28, 1936, in Black Hawk County, Iowa, the son of Walter and Jensine (Debel) Sorensen. He married Dorothy Lawson and later divorced. He then married Jo Grover.

John served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict and worked at Rath Packing Company and later Martin Wholesale Inc., both in Waterloo.

Survived by: his wife of Cedar Falls, son, Scott (Lorri Jordinsen) of Bondurant; two daughters, Jensine (Brian) Sullivan and Claudine (Nathan Fry) Sorensen, both of Cedar Falls; two step-daughters; Claudia (Bruce) Smith of Cedar Rapids and Joan Grover Behrle of West Union; step son, William “Butch” (Susie) Grover of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren, four step grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and sister, Viola Nelson of Waterloo.

Preceded by: two brothers, Clarence and Harry Sorensen; two sisters, Elena Schons and Eva Phillips and his former wife.

Private graveside services will be Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Richardson Funeral Service in Cedar Falls. Online condolences maybe left at www.richardsonfuneralservice.com . Memorials to be directed to the family.

John was proud of his Danish heritage. He was a kind and loving person, who donated over five gallons of blood to the American Red Cross.
