James R. Gesell

September 15, 1934 - December 2, 2014

James R. Gesell, 80, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, died Tuesday at his home.

He was born September 15, 1934, in Cedar Falls, the son of Clarence and Hattie Guyer Gesell. He married Betty J. Guynn on January 12, 1958 in Waterloo.

Jim was a policeman with the Waterloo Police Dept. for 17 years and later worked in assembly at John Deere for 21 years, retiring in 1996. He was a veteran of the US Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Cedar Falls; two sons, Tony (Bonnie) of Cedar Falls and Tom of Midland, Texas; two daughters, Terry Gesell of Brandon, South Dakota, and Debbi Greenslate of Grafton, Wisc.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill (June) of Big Sandy, Texas, and Tom (Judy) of Tiger, Georgia; and by two sisters, Bev Miller of Cedar Falls, and Winnie Hartenbauer of Peru, Illinois.

Services will be Saturday, December 6 at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway. Military rites will be conducted by Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and Evansdale Amvets Post 31 and flag folding by US Navy Funeral Honor Guard.

Public visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home on West Ridgeway, and continue for one hour before services on Saturday.

Jim was heavily involved on the council of boy Scouts of America Troupe 8, where he helped instruct his two sons to the rank of Eagle Scout. He also loved spending time with all his grandchildren.
