WATERLOO - Vernon “Bud” Rathbun, 96, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 18, 1919, in Independence, son of Carl and Madge Megonigle Rathbun. He married Virginia Chase on May 31, 1942, in St. Louis.

A 1936 graduate of Winthrop High School, Winthrop, Bud had worked for Precision Tool and Die for 17 1/2 years until going to Hawkeye College to instruct tool and die classes for another 17 1/2 years, retiring in 1983. He was member of First United Methodist Church, American Ex Prisoners of War and American Legion.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Kathy Jo (Mark) Sanborn of Waterloo; a son, Vernon (Barb) Rathbun Jr. of Owasso, Okla.; two granddaughters, Amy (Jason) Morgan of Pleasantville and Katie (Chris) Gaudian of Hudson; and four great-grandchildren, Joe and Sophia Morgan and Abby and Andrew Gaudian.

Preceded in death by: two brothers, Don and Richard Rathbun; and a sister, Iona Fernald.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at First United Methodist Church, Waterloo, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Waterloo American Legion Post 138, VFW Post 1623 and U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials: may be directed to the church or American Ex Prisoners of War, National Headquarters, 3201 East Pioneer Parkway #40 Arlington, TX 76010 or Up with Down, P.O. Box 8082, Des Moines 50301.

Bud served with the U.S. Air Force in the 333rd Bomb Squadron, 94th Bomb Group. His plane crashed in Germany and he was held as a POW from July 29, 1943 to May 2, 1945. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Prisoner of War medals.
