WATERLOO - Dr. P. Thomas "Tom" McGarvey died surrounded by family, on Sept. 20, 2015, following an extended battle with lung cancer. He was 75 years old.

P. Thomas McGarvey was born to Paul Francis McGarvey and Dorothy Scully McGarvey Gross on March 26, 1940, in Waterloo. His stepfather was Kirk Gross. He attended Waterloo West High School and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1962. He received his medical degree from the University of Iowa, School of Medicine, in 1966.

Tom married Margaret "Peg" Zeis at Immaculate Conception Church, Kenton, Ohio, on June 18, 1966. They had three loving children while living in Iowa City, where Tom completed his medical residency. After his residency Tom enlisted in the Army, where he held the rank of Major while serving at Fort Knox, Ky. He received an honorable discharge in 1973 and the family moved to Waterloo.

Tom began his medical career in Waterloo as a general surgeon at Surgical and Orthopedics Associates of Waterloo. He then became a founding partner of Cedar Valley Medical Specialists, where he also served as Medical Director and Compliance Officer towards the end of his career. Tom also enjoyed sharing his talents serving terms as Chief of Staff at both St. Francis and Allen Hospitals and teaching students at Allen School of Nursing and Hawkeye Technical College. He was a talented surgeon who always maintained the gift of compassion when caring for his patients.

Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, father-in-law and friend. He enjoyed travel, a good laugh and spending time with his grandchildren. He treasured time at the family cabin on Spider Lake in Hayward, Wis., where he enjoyed family meals, hosting family and friends, the Northwood’s wildlife, and an evening boat cruise.

Tom is survived by his sister Marjorie Breslow (Steve) of Las Vegas, son, Michael (Renee) McGarvey of St. Louis Park, Minn., son, Andrew (Angella) McGarvey of Edina, Minn., and daughter, Katharine (Stephen) Kelleher of Minneapolis. He also will be greatly missed by his adoring grandchildren, Thomas, James Paul, Eleanor, Patrick, Matthew, Katherine, Jack, Margaret and Caroline.

He was preceded in death by his wife Peg, his parents, and a brother, Jim Gross of Waterloo.

Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at St. Edward's Catholic Church, followed by burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery where there will be full military rites by the Iowa National Guard Funeral Honors Detail and Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Public visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Locke Funeral Home, with a public vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation also will be held an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to St. Edward's Church or the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa in care of the Margaret and Thomas McGarvey Family Charitable Fund.
