November 24, 1923 - March 22, 2015

Wayne Everette Hoofnagle, 91, of Waterloo, died peacefully Sunday, March 22 at his home surrounded by his beloved wife of 67 years, Theresa, and his family.

He was born November 24, 1923 in Fort Dodge, son of Ralph and Minnie Hollister Hoofnagle. He married Theresa Wagner June 19, 1948 in Waterloo.

Wayne was a lifelong craftsman and engineer. He was employed with John Deere for 10 years and later with Chamberlain Manufacturing for 37 years, retiring in 1988. When not busy raising his eight children, Wayne spent many hours in his woodshop creating anything from furniture to toys. These countless treasures became timeless memories for his children, grandchildren and generations to come. He shared his love of the outdoors and nature with family and friends and he was an avid fisherman. Wayne was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all.

Wayne was a U.S. Navy veteran stationed in Australia during World War II. He was an active board member of United Cerebral Palsy for several years.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dean (Leo) of Honolulu, Hawaii, Lyle (Diana Hedges) of Minneapolis, Minn. and Kim (Karen) of Oelwein; three daughters, SuZanne (Mark Chapleau) Hoofnagle of Iowa City, Dawn (Scott) Ferguson of Lovell, Maine and Annie Theresa Morgan of West Grove, Pa.; 16 grandchildren, Starri (Mike Sommerfield) Hedges, Eric (Melanie) Ladewig, Nicholas (Emily) Ladewig, Amy (Xzavier) Julion, Andrew (Shanna Tylee) Hoofnagle, Eric, Ian and Seth Ferguson, Gracie, Libbie and Emma Morgan, Leatrice and Philippe Galicinao, Gina, Nicole and Riley Chapleau; seven great-grandchildren, Jazmin Hedges, Lilly Ladewig, Michael Joe Hoofnagle and Xzavier, Zaren, Helena and Carissa Julion.

Preceded in death by a son, Alan James Hoofnagle and a daughter, Lynette Lorraine Johnson.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with entombment in Mt. Olivet Mausoleum, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo Amvets Post 19, Evansdale Post 31 and the US Navy Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 4-8 pm Friday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 4 pm rosary and a 7 pm vigil service. Visitation will continue for an hour before services at the church on Saturday.
