Dona Jean Carter

February 21, 1928 - April 25, 2015

Dona Jean Carter, 87, of Waterloo, died at home in the presence of family on April 25, 2015.

Dona was born on February 21, 1928 in Woodburn, Oregon; the daughter of Marshall and Irene Hicks. In 1930 she moved to Iowa with her mother. There, her mother Irene met and married Richard Reckner in whose loving home Dona was raised with two wonderful sisters brought into this world as a result of that union. She chose to adopt Reckner as her maiden name.

While attending the all grade Elma Iowa School she met Gaylord Carter whom she married after his return from World War II. This enduring union took place on July 11, 1945 in Riceville, Iowa.

Dona served humankind as a Registered Nurse for 24 years at Saint Francis/Covenant Medical Center.
After retiring, she spent a number of years as a volunteer for Cedar Valley Hospice.

She is survived by her beloved Husband, Gaylord Carter, six children; Gary (Jackie) Carter of Waterloo, Gayle (Tony) Borwig of Knoxville, Iowa, David (Maria) Carter of Vitoria, Brazil, Mark (Mary) Carter of Jefferson, Texas, Tim (Marsha) Carter of Independence, Iowa, and Ellen (Bill) Neebel of Decorah, Iowa; three sisters: Dixie (Roger) Gerholdt of Waterloo, and Myrtle Christensen of Riceville, Iowa.

She was blessed with 11 grandchildren: Richard (Brooke) Carter, Leah (Shawn) Topliff, Tony Borwig Jr, Chris (Debbie) Borwig, Damon Carter, Shannon Carter, Andrea (Chris) Lieuallen , Rebecca (Zachary) Neyhard, Danielle Carter, Kayla Carter, and Alex Carter.

She was further blessed with 12 Great Grandchildren, 4 Great Great Grandchildren and numerous Nephews and Nieces and two very dear friends Shirley Schmitz of Gilbertville and Jody Clark of Waterloo.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church with burial at 2:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Riceville. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. Time of Sharing. Visitation will continue at the church for one hour before services on Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or UnityPoint Hospice.
