Robert Joseph Manahl

October 17, 1919 - August 18, 2015

Robert J. Manahl, 95, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, August 18 at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center in Waterloo.

He was born October 17, 1919 in Waterloo, son of Clarence and Alfreda Layman Manahl. He married Frances E. Wirth October 25, 1945 and she preceded him in death. He married Lillie Munson June 30, 1995 and she preceded him in death.

Robert was employed with the US Postal Service, as a mail carrier, for 31 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corp.

Survivors include a daughter, Annette (James) Mears of Coal Valley Illinois; two sons, Michael Manahl of Waterloo and Kenneth Manahl of Springfield, Virginia; five grandchildren, Andrea (Richard), Matthew (Gina), Cassie, Louise, and Richard; and six great-grandchildren. Survivors also include three step-children, and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard; and by three sisters, Alyce Roeding, Barbara Cooley and Delores Baumback.

Services will be on Friday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo Amvets Post 19, Evansdale Amvets Post 31 and Iowa Army Guard. Public visitation will be from 5-7 pm Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, continuing for one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Bob thoroughly enjoyed life. He had many interests. In his 70’s he started piano lessons and joined the Proud Image Barbershop Group. He loved singing, dancing, bowling, gardening, genealogy, and reading.
