Alvin B. Schares

August 27, 1928 - August 17, 2015

Alvin B. Schares, 86, of Waterloo, Iowa, and formerly of Gilbertville, died Monday, August 17, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center.

He was born August 27, 1928 in LaPorte City, Iowa, the son of John and Clara Mangrich Schares. He married Celeste Schmitz on November 22, 1948 in Gilbertville. They were later divorced.

Al was employed with Youngblut Construction for 20 years and later did construction on his own.

Survivors include a son, Ron Schares of LaPorte City; two daughters, Diana Schares and Peggy Schares, both of Gilbertville; and a sister, Sr. Francis Clare Schares of Mankato, Minnesota.

Preceded in death by: four brothers, Gene, Ray, Vince and Leo Schares; and three sisters, Delores Frost, Adeline Gibbons and Mary Frost.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 5 p.m. rosary. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
