Carol Ann Lutgen, 72, died Wednesday, October 7 at UnityPoint Health Allen Memorial Hospital from complications of surgery.
She was born February 21, 1943 in Waterloo, daughter of William and Evelyn Heinen Schmit. She married Richard “Dick” Lutgen on June 27, 1964 in Waterloo. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Carol graduated from Don Bosco High School in 1961. She was employed in the office at GMAC, retiring in 1994.
She is survived by three sons, Jeff (Dee Dee) Lutgen of LaPorte City, Ricky (Callie) Lutgen of Waverly and Jason (Dawn) Lutgen of Gilbertville; two daughters, Paula (Jeff) Ortner of Gilbertville and Patti (Mike) Wilson of Jesup; fifteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, with one on the way; three brothers, William (Bert) Schmit of Colo., Dick (Anita) Schmit of Elk Run Heights, Jerry (Cindy) Wagner of Evansdale; five sisters, Pat (Kenny) Stirm of Fla., Jean (Mark) Hayden of Colo., Lynette (Gary) Frost of LaPorte City, Kim (Brent) Cantrel of Waterloo and Tina (Dave) Morales of Cedar Falls; a special friend, Bill Holschlag of Unionville.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jersey Lutgen and a sister, Donna Monat.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street. Visitation also for one hour preceding services at the church on Monday.
Memorials may be directed to the church, UnityPoint Hospice or the Vascular Center in Iowa City.
Carol loved to work outside, following her grandkids to all their sporting events and spending time with her dog Tazer. She was lovingly called mom and grandma by her family and so many others.
