Patricia E. McClain

May 9, 1956 - October 13, 2015

Biography--

Patricia E. McClain, 59, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, October 13 at UnityPoint Allen Hospital.

She was born May 9, 1956 in Ottumwa, daughter of Marvin and Kay Kearns Orona. She married Gary McClain August 21, 1987 in Waterloo.

Patty graduated from the University of Northern Iowa and was employed as an associate with Area 267 and later as a teacher at Sacred Heart Catholic School since 2000. She was an active member of Agnus Dei Ministry in Waterloo.

In her lifetime, Patty was a daughter, sister, wife, teacher, friend, Godmother and mother to many cats and dogs. She excelled in all these roles. Patty enjoyed being a teacher and truly loved all her students. In her free time, Patty liked taking bike rides, spending time at home with her husband Gary, in her new kitchen, on her deck and of course, talking on the phone.

Patty spent a lifetime's worth of time on the phone - it was her best and favorite escape. In that time, she talked to those she knew about everything and anything. Patty practiced and quietly preached a quality we all endeavor to use more - acceptance. Patty understood and accepted people for who they are, but always helped those around her to aspire to be more than they were. Patty's daily practice of acceptance of others grew into a broader Christian faith as she grew older, and that faith was a rock for her in her last weeks.

Survivors include her husband, Gary; two brothers, Mike (Joy) Orona of Ottumwa and Dennis (Denese) Orona of Waterloo and four nephews, Craig (Maria) Orona and Andy Orona of Ottumwa, Daniel Orona and David Orona, both of Elk Run Heights.

Preceded in death by her parents.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 17, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church.
