Biography--

Dorothy L. Wheeler, 93, of Waterloo, died on Monday, December 1, 2014 at the Friendship Village Pavilion, of natural causes.

She was born August 13, 1921 in Hudson, the oldest daughter of Vincil “Jack” Miller and Alma F. Rarick Philp. Dorothy graduated from Orange High School in 1939 and graduated from Gates Business College in August of 1944.

Her first full time job was in the traffic department at John Deere for 4-1/2 years during World War II.

Dorothy married Alvin R. Wheeler on May 14, 1945 in Hudson while he was in the Army Air Force. He died September 26, 2007.

She was a member of the Cedar Heights Baptist Church. She was vice-president of the Black Hawk Co. 4-H for one year and a 4-H leader of one of the Orange township 4-H Clubs for two years. She was an avid seamstress and she won many awards at the National Dairy Cattle Congress over the years. She loved to collect thimbles and she loved her peonies and tulips in the spring.

Some of Dorothy’s hobbies included sewing, crocheting, knitting, tatting, needlework and reading. More recently, she enjoyed doing puzzles, watching TV, reading the newspaper and playing dominoes with her friends. She will be fondly remembered as being pleasant and friendly to everyone.

Dorothy is survived by her son: Keith and his wife Maria of Chandler, Arizona; two grandchildren, Seth and Caleb Wheeler; two step-grandchildren, Crystal and Aaron Klein; and seven great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband; son, Kendall A. Wheeler; sisters, Elaine Philp (as a child) and Gwendolyn Poyner of Oakland, California.
