Donald D. Duven, 91, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital of natural causes. He was born August 24, 1923 in Orange City, Iowa, son of William and Tillie (DeJong) Duven.

Don graduated from Cherokee High School; earned a bachelor's degree in 1945 at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kingspoint, N.Y., and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from University of Iowa in 1949. He was a Letterman wrestler at both the Academy and U of I.

He served in the Merchant Marine Coast Guard as a cadet midshipman and 2nd mate during World War II in the Pacific near Okinawa, Japan.

Don married Helen E. Karlson on June 6, 1946; she died March 27, 2014.

He was employed at Maytag Corporation from 1949 to 1965 rising to the position of Plant 2 Manager. Don left Maytag to pursue his entrepreneurial spirit working for Thombert, Inc., a small industrial plastics firm, then acquiring Erwin Weller Co. in 1967 in Sioux City. He then acquired Bair Co. of Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1969. Following that, Don remained true to his independent nature in Lincoln owning Imperial Roofing Co. In 1986 he moved to Waterloo, where he owned and managed numerous real estate investments.

Don was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. He was involved in numerous organizations and civic activities including achieving Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts, Scout Master, Elks Club and Rotary in Newton, Sioux City and Waterloo.

He is survived by his children, Doug (Dawn) Duven of Waterloo; Diann (John) Duvenez of Oak Harbor, Washington, and Bill (Susan) Duven of Monument, Colorado; nine grandchildren, Jennifer(Dan) Hucker, Emily Duven, Ben Duven, Sean (Amber) Bovee, Ryan Duvenez, Allison Duvenez, Alex Duven, Katie Duven and Madeline Duven; four great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Duven of Lincoln, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; brothers, Wilson and Fred Duven; and sister, Josephine Hendren.

Don loved to read, study, analyze and philosophize. Family was everything, but the love of his life was his wife of 69 years, Helen.
