John R. Derifield
Died: Dec. 9, 2014

Biography--

John Russell Derifield, 46, of Waterloo, Iowa, died at home Tuesday, December 9, 2014.

He was born February 13, 1968, in Waterloo, the only son of Patrick and Evelyn Russell Derifield. He married Jody Goldsberry Stephens and they were recently separated.

John graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1986 and earned an associate's degree from Hawkeye Community College. He was with Architectural Sheet Metal for several years, installing sheet metal on buildings all across Iowa (earning him the “Tinman” nickname). John was an excellent bartender in many local clubs through the years— easy to talk to, always with a smile, and knew how to work a full house when necessary. He most recently worked for Grainger Industrial Supplier. He was a past member of ABATE of Iowa.

John is survived by: a daughter, Terisa "Shea" Rowan and an adopted daughter, Amber Rowan, both of Muscatine, Iowa; two grandchildren, Xander and Caprice; his parents of Waterloo; two sisters, Bridgette Skinner and husband Tom of Evansdale, Iowa and Patty Beninga and husband Byron of Parkersburg, Iowa; and a large diverse circle of friends.

At an early age he demonstrated skills in roller-skating, swimming, and mindbender puzzles. In his early teens, he could solve a Rubik’s Cube in 90 seconds! John learned to play the guitar at the age of eleven and became an accomplished blues musician and played with local bands in the Cedar Valley. He loved riding Harleys and would ride a thousand miles (in all kinds of weather) just to be able to follow the road.

John’s quick wit, engaging smile and infectious laugh will be missed. He was kind of an amazing guy.
