Edna K. Droste

Died: Dec 25, 2014

Biography--

Edna Karoline Droste, 99 of Waterloo, died at ManorCare Health Services on Thursday, December 25, 2014, of natural causes.

She was born in Frederika Township, Bremer County, Iowa on June 3, 1915, daughter of Ernest and Sophia Burmeister Bahlmann. Edna grew up on the family farm north of Tripoli, and attended a one-room school house through the eighth grade.

She married Leo H. Droste January 23, 1939 at the Methodist Parsonage in Guthrie Center, Iowa; he died May 22, 1982. Together, they loved fishing going to Waterville, Minnesota every summer with friends and then taking their children with them as well. Those were always great family vacations filled with love and fun.

She worked at Rath Packing for 15 years, then worked for a year at Chamberlain Manufacturing before working for the Waterloo Community School District where she retired after 19 years in 1980.

Edna had been a member of First Lutheran Church since 1943. Edna was baptized July 4, 1915 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Church in LeRoy Township in Bremer County by Rev. W. Wustenberg. She was confirmed at the same church on April 1, 1928 by Rev. G. M. Betz. Her memory verse was Psalm 27, verse 1.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Droste of Waterloo; two sons, Jim and wife Connie and Charles and wife Diann, both of Waterloo; six grandchildren: Amy and husband Dennis Klinsky of Ely; Jason and wife Denise Droste of Hudson; Ryan and wife Megan Droste of Cedar Falls; Suzanne Droste of Madison, Wisc.; Michael Droste of Washington, DC; and Steve and wife Roxy Droste of Waterloo; nine great‑grandchildren: Alex, Mason, Brady, Carter, Kaylee, Brad, Stewart, Missy, and Tyler; and her sister, Darlene Bahlmann of Tripoli.

Edna is preceded in death by her husband; grandson, Richard Droste; two stepdaughters, Jeanette Ladage and JoAnn Boeckman; stepson, LaVern 'Red' Droste; brother, Lawrence Bahlmann; and sister, Viola Bahlmann.

Something not everyone would probably know is that Edna enjoyed watching Nascar races. This probably came about due to her step-son, “Red’s,” dirt track racing in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Attending races on weekends was another opportunity for a family outing.

Her family was extremely important to her. After her husband passed, Edna babysat some of her grandchildren – Amy, Jason, and Ryan. In recent years she enjoyed seeing her great-grandchildren on a regular basis. She was very proud of each family member and shared that with others whenever the opportunity presented itself.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
