Biography--

Erling A. “Erl” Schmiesing, 75 of Waterloo died September 17, 2015 surrounded by his family.

Erl was born March 22nd, 1940 in New Ulm, Minnesota, son of Earl L. and Arlene Vee Schmiesing. Erl was a 1958 graduate of Madelia High School and the Graduate School of Banking University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin.

He married Kay Trytten on March 9, 1963, in Hanska, Minnesota. They were members of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls.

He held and served on numerous boards, including Magna Banks, Allen Hospital, People’s Community Health Clinic, Iowa Health Systems, Junior Achievement, Kiwanis Club of Waterloo, United Way of Cedar Valley, Main Street of Waterloo, Cedar Valley Economic Development Corporation, the Iowa Transfer Systems, Republicans of Black Hawk County and many others.

Erl retired in March 1997 from Iowa National Bankshares where he was CEO and Chairman of the Board. He fully enjoyed his retirement filling his time with family, friends, and many activities which included biking, collecting antique guns, and phonographs, as well as traveling. His passion was buying and restoring old cars.

He is survived by his wife, Kay Schmiesing of Waterloo; one daughter, Lisa Schmiesing of Phoenix, Arizona; one son, Eric (April) Schmiesing of Waterloo; one grandson, Ryan (Samantha) Schmiesing of Cedar Falls and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Owen. Brothers: Roger (Edna) Schmiesing of St. James, Minnesota; Michael (Sandi) Schmiesing of Stillwater, Minnesota, and sister: Julie Carey and domestic partner Mike Sloan of Park Rapids, Minnesota.

Erl was preceded in death by one son, Michael Schmiesing.
