HARLINGEN, Texas - Arlene Louise Janssen, 90, passed away on Nov. 13, 2014, at her residence.

Arlene was born May 23, 1924, in Oran Township, to Edward and Alma Weidler Spear. She graduated from Allen Memorial Hospital Lutheran School of Nursing as an RN in May 1946. Arlene served her country as a cadet in Women’s Army Air Corps and married Richard Henry Janssen on Aug. 10, 1947. She was a farmer’s wife and then a motel owner in Commerce, Texas, and Edinburg, Texas. Arlene was of the Lutheran faith and was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Harlingen. She enjoyed meet and make, kitchen band and loved to travel.

Arlene is survived by her daughters, Patricia Broome (R.G.) and Judy Cook; son Keith Janssen (Ronna); grandchildren Tamara Brown, Todd Broome, Cynthia Segroves, Cheryl Espinosa, Tabitha Mills, Tiffany Phillips, Laura Janssen, James Cook, Justin Cook and Angelia Farmer; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren spread from Alaska to Florida and all states in between.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; daughter Elaine Marie Janssen; sister Delores Pruisner; and brother Edward Spear.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at Quality Inn and Suites, Waterloo. Graveside services to follow at 11 a.m. at Garden of Memories, Waterloo.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Harlingen or a charity of choice in her name.

The family would like to express special thanks to the Odyssey House Hospice caregivers: Maria, Louise and Helen. Also the staff and friends from Canterbury Court and Gardens for their care and wellbeing for the past 2 ½ years. Her last years were filled with many good memories.
