HANS F. RAHN DIED INSTANTLY

ATTACKED BY HEART TROUBLE LAST EVENING

Resident of Iowa 89 Years and of Waterloo 9 - Honored Man

Hans F. Rahn. since 1872 a resident of Iowa and for the past nine years a burgher of Waterloo, died suddenly last, evening, about 7:45 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. D. Chester, 927 Mullan Avenue west. The cause of demise was heart disease or apoplexy.

Mr. Rahn had gone from his home, 902 Mullan Avenue West, to the home of his daughter for an evening visit. He complained to his daughter of pains In the chest and explained that an application of hot water had relieved his distress before leaving home. The distress continued to increase and finally a mustard plaster was suggested. Mrs. Chester started to secure the plaster, when with the exclamation, "I feel so queer," Mr. Rahn toppled over upon the floor and was dead before assistance could reach him. Mr. Rahn. had always been In the best of health and last evening he experienced practically the only serious illness of his life.

The sudden death come with crushing force upon members of the family as well as upon a large circle of friends. Mr. Rahn was one of the kindest of men and upright in all the walks of life. He was an active member of the German Lutheran Church and he practiced faithfully the precepts of that faith and denomination.

Hans F. Rahn was born Sept. 29, 1839, in Maggledorf, Germany, and he was married in that country to Miss Magdalena Witt on April 29, 1865. They remained in the old country about seven years after their marriage, during which time Mr. Rahn served three years in the Prussian army, being a member of the Hussars, one of the famous organizations of the army of the emperor.

After the term of service in the army was honorably completed, Mr. Rahn and his family emigrated to America. They arrived at Sabula, in Jackson County, Iowa, in 1872. In the fall of 1874 the family removed to Benton County, where they made their home on a farm until 1902, in which year Mr. Rahn retired from active work and business. The family home has been made in Waterloo since 1902.

Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rahn and six of them survive with the mother. The children are Mrs. Catherine Eckhart of Doliver, Ia.; John F. and Fred W. of La Porte; Mrs. L. D. Chester, at whose home the death occurred, and Miss Mary, who made her home with her parents. There are three grandchildren living.

Awaiting the arrival of Mrs. Eckhart, funeral arrangements have not been completed. The arrival of the daughter is expected this evening or tonight.

The remains today rest at the family home. Interment will be in the family burying ground in Benton County. A minister of the German Lutheran Church will have charge of the services.
