WATERLOO - Walter Havlik, 83, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at Methodist Hospital of a traumatic head injury suffered in an auto accident Oct. 25.

He was born June 22, 1931, to Elenora and Tony Havlik.

Walt graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterloo and served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He spent his career working for the USDA Meat and Poultry Inspection Department.

Survived by his wife of 57 years, Beverly; three sons, children Steven (Pam) of Robbinsdale, Minn., Gordon of Ankeny and Robert (Annette) of Osceola; a daughter, Leanne (Scott) Stueck of Elkhart; six grandchildren, Michael (Cassie), Kristin, Terence, Matthew, Brian, and Jared; two great-grandchildren, Chase and Morgan; and four sisters, Elsie McElmeel, Helen Schmidt, JoAnn Snodgrass and Kathy Hanson.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Joe Havlik.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Waukee, followed by burial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Iles Funeral Homes, Des Moines, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to St. Boniface Catholic Church or Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.

Walter had an interest in antique cars, was a fun story teller, and always wanted to help friends and family with projects from home maintenance to auto repair.
