WATERLOO - Robert E. "Sam" Wessely, 68, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at Allen Hospital of a pulmonary embolism.

He was born Dec. 29, 1936, in Waterloo, son of William and Mildred Shepherd Wessely. He married Phyllis Ohrt June 9, 1956, in Reinbeck.

He graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1955. Following high school he worked for Red Droste as an auto mechanic, later worked for Hahn Auto and Martineau Motors, Waterloo Park Department, Lewis Motors and John Deere Engine Works, from where he retired in 1997.

After retirement he was a motorcycle racing team mechanic. During his career Robert built many stock car and motorcycle engines. He was an expert mechanic and machinist.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Kent (Pam) of Prairie Village, Kan., and Roger (Lisa) of Lakeside, Calif.; two daughters, Holly (Dick) Dunkelberger of La Porte City and Janette (Elias "Sonny") Lozano of LaPlanta, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and a sister, Augusta (Lyle) Burkhardt of Janesville.

Preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard; a half sister, Betty Marshek; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Brethren Church, with private family inurnment in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball.
