WATERLOO - John Pershing Hinkel, 90, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Greenwood Manor, Iowa City, following an extended illness.

He was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Wadena, son of Oscar and Cora Mae Voshell Hinkel. He married Ruth Huse in 1946 in Waterloo.

Mr. Hinkel graduated from Wadena High School in 1936, then served in the U.S. Army. He was employed by New Era Industries as a tool and die maker until 1972, then worked for Doerfer's Engineering, retiring in 1982. He was a member of Palo United Methodist Church.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Tammy (Vernon) Werning and Kathleen Pribyl; two sons, Russell (Barbara) and Gary (Pat Herdegen); 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert; and two sisters, Bernadine Ginter and Betty Pries.

Preceded in death by a son, James; five brothers, Donald, Russell, William, Richard and Delmar; and two sisters, Ona Buck and Alo Church.

Military graveside services: will be held at a later date. He chose to donate his body to the Deeded Body Program at the University of Iowa. Lensing Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Iowa City, is handling arrangements.
