James J. Schuler, 70, of 1828 Cornwall Ave., died Sunday, May 25, 2003 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

Jim was born March 3, 1933, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Joseph Vincent and Rita (Weidner) Schuler. He grew up in Dubuque, graduating from Dubuque Senior High School in 1951.

After high school, he joined the U.S. Army, serving from 1953 to 1955. Jim married Eulalia "Lu" Franzen September 12, 1953 in Saint Lucas, Iowa.

Jim served with the Waterloo Police Department from 1963 to 1969 and in Security at John Deere until his retirement in 1995. He also worked in sales with Tate Cadillac, Martinau Motors, Rasmussen Furniture, Radio Shack, and as an instructor in security at Hawkeye Community College.

Jim was a man of many facets, He was a devoted husband and wonderful father and grandfather, instilling in his family the importance of family and a great sense of humor. He was a faithful member of his church, Sacred Heart, serving as an usher and Eucharistic Minister and faithful in attendance. He was a superb story teller, loved to fish, write, family trips, camping, outdoors, photography, shooting, and working with wood both artistic carving and making furniture, candle sticks and doll cradles.

Survived by his wife Lu; daughter Lynn and her husband Jim Gehrke of Evansdale; daughter Teri and her husband Steve Kirschbaum of Cedar Falls; daughter Cindy and her husband Ned DeBerg of Waterloo; daughter Judy Poyzer of Waterloo; son Joe and his wife Cathy of Waterloo; son Jim of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, Jenny Clark and her children Amanda and Lexi, Sara (Chris) Weichman; Josh Bracken, Ben (Becky) Kirschbaum and their children Sage and Kirsten, Jay Bracken, J.J. Schuler, Katie Joe Schuler, Jamie Leigh Schuler, Zackery Poyzer, Michael Schuler, Chelsea Poyzer; and his sister Doris (Russ) Selchert of Dubuque.
