Betty E. Happel, 82, of Waverly, formerly of the Waterloo and Dunkerton areas, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at The Meadows Assisted Living, Shell Rock.

She was born April 4, 1932, near Aplington, daughter of Peter and Minnie Buseman Eilers. She married Vernon C. Happel on Aug. 16, 1963, at Trinity Reformed Church, Allison; he died May 13, 2014.

A 1951 graduate of Allison High School, Allison, Betty had worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 10 years in Waverly and Cedar Rapids. She and her husband farmed the Happel family farm for 45 years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church Bennington Township, where she was the custodian for nine years.

Survived by two daughters, Sherry L. Happel of Lansing, Kan., and Lori (Al) Happel-Jarratt of Cannon Falls, Minn.; and a brother, Nathan (Sharon) Eilers of Hampton.

Preceded in death by her parents.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bennington Township, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home, Waterloo, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family or the church.

Betty also loved gardening, traveling and bowling.
