ARLINGTON - Pete Mathew Wingert, 73, of Arlington, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

He was born April 3, 1936, in Waterloo, son of Joseph George and Bertha Mary Even Wingert. He married Eleanor Marie Cosselman on Aug. 5, 1961, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein.

He graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Oelwein, in 1954, and served on active duty in the U.S. Army. Mr. Wingert farmed west of Arlington and worked at John Deere, Waterloo, for 35 years, retiring July 31, 1990.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survived by his wife; three sons, David (Sandi) of Pleasant Hill, Paul (Tammy) of Jesup and Don (Denyce) of West Des Moines; a daughter, Judy (Eric) Avenson of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Margaret (Lee) Wayson of Warsaw, Ill., Luella (Arnold) Suhr of Arlington and Bertha Scheckel of Hazleton; and a brother, Joe (Phyllis) of Arlington.

Preceded in death by an infant daughter, Florence; and two brothers, Roman and Francis.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, both in Oelwein. Military rites will be conducted by Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. parish Scripture service.

Memorial fund has been established.
