Jim was born in Waterloo, Iowa on June 1, 1955, to Paul and Meryl Pfaltzgraff Nedtwig. He graduated from Waterloo West High School and Iowa State University. On February 9, 1996 he married Beth Henning.

Jim's passion in life was restoring native oak savanna on his land. He was active in the prairie and savanna restoration community, was a charter member of the Iowa Native Plant Society, and had served on the board of the Iowa Prairie Network. After mastering the identification of Iowa native plants, he recently turned his attention to birds, insects, and fungi. He was a volunteer water monitor and a champion for Iowa's natural resources.

Jim enjoyed bicycling, canoeing and kayaking, ballroom dancing, and keeping family and friends supplied with honey from his bee hives. He spent ten years restoring his home in Des Moines, excelling especially as a mason. He had served on the boards of the Midwest Grocers Credit Union and the Iowa Civil Liberties Union. Jim was a critical thinker, quick wit, and a gentle soul.

Jim is survived by his wife, Beth Henning, of Des Moines; siblings John Nedtwig of Ames and Ann Alton of South Carolina; mother-in-law Carol Keeling; sisters-in-law Kay Livingstone, Nancy Vigil, Joyce Henning, Cora Letz, and Julie Keeling; brothers-in-law Tom Alton, Jim Vigil, Bill Klawitter, John Letz, Jim Keeling, Tom Keeling, and John Keeling; and the nieces and nephews who had voted him "Best Uncle."

Memorials will be used to preserve a piece of Iowa's native prairie and savanna in Jim's name. Memorials may be made to Environmental Habitat Corporation - Jim Nedtwig Memorial in care of Dan Towers, Greene County Conservation Board, 114 N. Chestnut, Jefferson, IA 50129.
