CEDAR FALLS - Verna M. DeHart, 86, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at ManorCare Health Care Services of a sudden illness.

She was born Feb. 7, 1922, in Niobrara, Neb., daughter of Guy and Ellen Lowell Smith.

She graduated from Niobrara High School, then attended business college in Omaha, Neb. On Feb. 6, 1948, she married Ed Erickson. He preceded her in death in November 1959. She then married LaRoy DeHart on May 11, 1968, in Waterloo. He preceded her in death in February 2000.

She worked in personnel payroll at Titus until their business relocated. She then worked at Hawkeye Community College in the accounting department until her retirement. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Waterloo Business Women and First Methodist Church, Cedar Falls. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing cards.

Survived by two sons, Doug (Edie) Erickson of Des Moines and Mike (Molly Smithgall) Erickson of Seattle; a stepson, Marvin (Angela) DeHart of Frisco, Texas; a stepdaughter, Sandy (Bob) Messerer of Waterloo; eight grandchildren, Mike (Debby) Messerer of Cedar Falls, Shelly (Dave) Surovy of Evansdale, Tammie (Bill) Mettlin of Hudson, Angie Erickson, Jean Ann DeHart of Livingston, Mont., Jon DeHart and Julie Roderick, both of Dallas, and Missy (Rob) Gaston of Midland, Texas; 19 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ella Mae Schanek of Niobrara.

Preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Ed Erickson; her second husband, LaRoy DeHart; and four brothers.

Memorial services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Parrott and Wood Chapel of Memories, with private family burial at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak. Public visitation for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.
