WATERLOO - Esther F. Spooner, 92, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Allen Hospital.

She was born April 5, 1916, in Black Hawk County, daughter of William and Dora Poock Happel. She married Melvin Matthias at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Klinger in 1933, and they were later divorced. She then married Harold Spooner on Nov. 1, 1975, in Oelwein. He died April 18, 1984.

She worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing for 14 years and then was a nurse's assistant at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein for 10 years.

Survived by a sons Leroy Matthias of Waterloo; two daughters, Carol (Jim) Swinford of Savannah, Ga., and Maxine (William) Layne of Debary, Fla.; a brother, Vernon (Betty) Happel of Waterloo; a sister, Donna (John) Falk of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a son, Kenneth Matthias; a daughter, Janet Taylor-Anderson; three brothers, Richard, William and Leroy Happel; and four sisters, Elda Warneke, Hilda Meyer, Dorothy Holdiman and Anna Gielau.

Private family services will take place at Garden View Chapel, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
