Death in Car Ruled Suicide, Shotgun Used

A gunshot victim who was dead on arrival at Schoitz Memorial Hospital late Friday afternoon has been ruled a suicide victim by self-inflicted wounds.

Theodore Ambrose Hemmer, 43, of 533 W. 2nd St., was brought to the hospital by John Cooper Jr., 915 W. Mullan Ave.

Cooper said Hemmer had recently been released from Allen Hospital and the two men decided to go hunting. While driving on South Kimball Avenue, Cooper said, Hemmer was in the rear seat of Cooper's auto.

Cooper said he heard a shotgun blast from the rear seat and turned to see Hemmer slumped over. Cooper turned around and rushed to the nearby hospital where Hemmer was reported dead from a 16 gauge shotgun wound in the chest.

Hemmer reportedly had a recent history of emotional disability, according to the county Medical Examiner, Dr. Paul T. O'Keefe, who ruled the death a suicide.

Services will be at St. John's Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Hemarn, member of the team ministry at St. John's and St. Nicholas Catholic Church, officiating. Burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Scripture services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Oppold Funeral Home where friends may call after 3 p.m. today.

Mr. Hemmer was born Dec. 11, 1929, in Waterloo to Peter and Geraldine Johnston Hemmer. He married Betty Remling on July 9, 1969, in Waterloo.

Mr. Hemmer was a machinist at Waterloo John Deere Tractor Works, but had not been working the past few months due to a disability leave. He was a member of Local 838 of the United Auto Workers.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Edward, and one daughter Angela, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Geraldine Hemmer of 833 W. 2nd St.; one brother, Donald of 114 Hartman St.; three sisters: Mrs. Jack Cooper of 916 W. Mullan Ave., Mrs. William Engel of Austin, Minn., Mrs. Robert Schmidt of Garden Grove, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his father.
