WATERLOO - Joseph L. Bernard, 87, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Sept. 9, 1919, in Jesup, son of Albert W. and Vestina Hopper Bernard. He married Erin Harn on Aug. 9, 1942, in Waterloo.

Mr. Bernard worked as a supervisor for Chamberlain Manufacturing for 44 years, retiring in 1983. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Jolene Bennett of Clermont; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Elner) of Waterloo; and two sisters, Helene Wilhite of California and Mary Warren of Arizona.

Preceded in death by a son, Joseph A.; four brothers, Mark, Bernard, Vincent and Jerry in infancy; and two sisters, Bernadette Kayser and Mary Bernard in infancy.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post No. 138 and the V.F.W. Post 1623. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Garden View Chapel, where there will be a 7 p.m. Scripture service, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
