WATERLOO - Raymond L. "Ray" Ackerman, 87, of Waterloo, died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Allen Hospital of cancer.

He was born May 31, 1921, in Black Hawk County, son of Louis and Iva Padget Ackerman. He married Marion Sackett on July 11, 1942, in Missouri.

He joined Rath Packing Co. on May 1, 1937, and the Management Club on April 23, 1953, and continued to work for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Mount Hope Methodist Church, president of the Dewar Community Hall, president of the Dewar social club at Maurer Repair, proud charter member of Black Hawk County Pheasants Forever Committee, where he was a member of longtime commitment and outstanding contributions. He loved attending all of his children and grandchildren's sporting and various school activities. His special love was watching his grandson's race in Independence.

Survivors include his wife, Marion of Waterloo; one son, Mark (Carolyn) Ackerman of Waterloo; one daughter, Janet (Del) Clubine of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Darren (Jennifer) Ackerman of Readlyn, Jennifer (Jay) Rhymer of Waterloo, Denise (Brian) Culp of Williamsburg and Chad (April) Clubine of Janesville; four great-grandchildren, Jackson, Kaitlyn and Kaylee Grace Culp and Conner Clubine; and two sisters-in-law, Berniece Ackerman of Waterloo and Dorothy Dickinson of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Debi Rae Ackerman; one brother, Robert Ackerman; two brothers-in-law, Ernie Dickinson and Vernie Schwake; and one sister-in-law, Alta White.

Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Garden View Chapel, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and one hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
