Leslie Gates, Ex-Furniture Dealer, Dies

Leslie Bowman Gates, 70, of 124 Graceline Boulevard, died at 5 a.m. Tuesday at Allen Memorial Hospital of heart disease. Gates had been a partner in the former Nichols & Gates Furniture Store.

Gates was born Sept. 23, 1881, in Carlisle, Pa., the son of John and Rebecca Gates. He attended school in Carlisle and Northwestern College at Naperville, Pa.

He married Emily Lesher Feb. 11, 1909, in Naperville. The couple moved to Waterloo in 1911 when Gates became manager of Leath & Co. Furniture Store on East Fourth Street.

In 1913 he formed a partnership with Walter J. Nichols to establish Nichols & Gates Furniure Store at 405 West Fourth Street. In 1933 the business was moved to 170 West Fourth Street, the location of the present McGregor's furniture store. Gates
retired in 1946.

Survivors include his wife; four brothers: Frank and Ellsworth, both of Lancaster, Pa., Chester, Martinsburg, W. Va., and William Carlisle, Pa., and one sister, Miss Mary Gates, Carlisle.

Funeral arrangements are being made at O'Keefe & Towne Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Leslie B. Gates, 70, of 124 Graceline Boulevard, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. H. E. Dierenfield, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. The casket will not be opened at the church but friends may call at O'Keefe & Towne Funeral Home until noon Friday. Mr. Gates died at 5 a. m. Tuesday at Allen Memorial hospital of heart disease.
