WATERLOO - James Patrick Abernathey, 92, of Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of Evansdale and Traer, died Thursday, Aug. 7, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo.

He was born Feb. 20, 1922, in Shady Grove, Buchanan County, son of Edwin and Florence Primmer Abernathey. He married Virginia Jurgens on March 1, 1941, in Dysart.

Jim farmed for 30 years, and retired from B. L. Anderson Quarry in 1987. After retirement, he drove a truck for Liquid Grow.

Survived by his wife; a son, James “Jim” (Geraldine) of Waterloo; a daughter, Nancy Mahood of Elberon; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and a sister, Louella Studebaker of Independence.

Preceded in death by three brothers; and two sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at American Lutheran Church, La Porte City, with burial in Oneida Cemetery, Clutier. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Jim was a deacon at his church in La Porte City and was also involved in building the church.
