WATERLOO - John R. "Jack" Young, 87, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Waterloo, son of James and Laura Schleuter Young. He married Virginia M. Schulte on July 20, 1946, in Waterloo.

Mr. Young graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1939. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Alabama. He was employed with Swiss Valley Fresh Milk Dairy (formerly Carnation Fresh Milk) for 38 years, retiring in 1983.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Mark (Patti) of Waterloo and Kenneth (Joyce) of Sulphur Springs, Ark.; two daughters, Constance Hanna of Coon Rapids, Minn., and LuAnn Flynn of Glendale, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, Laura (Brian) Klepinger, Jennifer (Scott) Nordquist, Tyler Young, Matthew (Jenni) Young, Andrew Young, Kevin Flynn, Bryan Flynn, Aubrey Young and Cameron Young; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas Klepinger, Elly Klepinger, Lydia Nordquist and Rachel Nordquist; and a sister-in-law, Loa Belle Young of Chicago.

Preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert J.; and a sister, Corinne (Charles) Walensky.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
