WATERLOO -- Verelyn Mathias Mayer, 85, of Waterloo, died Thursday, July 24, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital of complications of heart surgery.

He was born March 15, 1929 in Stacyville, son of Mathias and Marguarite Morse Mayer. He married Rita Mae Keefe Sept. 2, 1950 in Waterloo.

Verelyn graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in 1947. Verelyn served in the United States Navy Reserves for 7 years. He was employed as a printer with the Waterloo Daily Courier for 43 ½ years retiring in 1990. He then worked for Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service from 1990 until the present. He was head of the parish council at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, active in scouting and served on the board of the Iowa Community Credit Union. He also was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survived by his wife; a son, Robert of Waterloo; two daughters, Verla (Ronnie) Green of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Vicki (Russ) Dabney of Cedar Falls; ten grandchildren, Leigh (Jason) Martin, Lynn (Pete) Eklund, Christine (Trent) Short, Jill (Tom) Blaser, Jana Speck, Aaron (Hollye) Dabney, Ryan (Brenna) Dabney, Megan Daley, Autumn Mayer and Randi Mayer; 26 great-grandchildren; a sister, Bonita (Bob) Troutner of Cedar Falls; and a brother, Jim (Ann) Frein of Vail, Colo.

Preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, Henry Frein; and a son, Randy Mayer.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South St. with a 4 p.m. rosary service by the 3rd & 4th degree Knights of Columbus and a vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be given to Sacred Heart Church or the charity of your choice.
