Keith Clark Brinker, 93, a resident of Jenner's Pond in West Grove, Pa., and formerly of Wilmington, Del., died peacefully Friday, July 18, 2014, from complications related to chronic illness. He was the son of the late Albert William and Elsie Henry Brinker. Keith, a native of Waterloo, attended the University of Northern Iowa and went on to earn his master's degree from Iowa State University in 1943. After graduation he moved to Berkley, Calif., as an employee of the Shell Development Co. In 1944, he entered the amphibious forces of the U.S. Navy, ultimately serving as the navigator for the USS Hanover (APA 116).
After World War II, he earned a Doctorate in Organic Chemistry at the University of Iowa while also teaching chemistry to medical students. Keith moved his family to Wilmington in 1951, accepting a position with the DuPont Co. as a research chemist working with polymers. His many achievements included numerous patents for plastics used in both the auto and space industries. In 1979 Keith retired from his position as a senior consultant.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothea Holley in 1967; his sister, Norma Brinker Jones; his second wife, Adrienne Ayres Reynolds; a brother-in-law, Richard F. Jones; and a daughter, Karla Brinker Rafferty.
He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Brinker Allison (Michael) of Bozeman, Mont.; a son, Chris Albert Brinker (Marcia) of Wilmington; two stepchildren, Jennifer Jane Reynolds and Roger Jordan Reynolds (Michele), both of Wilmington; a sister, Claudia Brinker Kelsey (Robert) of Raleigh, N.C.; a son-in-law, James Rafferty of Salt Lake City; as well as seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
KC, as he was known, enjoyed fishing, playing pool, bridge, hunting, traveling and spending time at his beach cottage in Stone Harbor, N.J.
His fondness for steamed crab was the basis for many happy family reunions. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.
There will be a private graveside service at the Brandywine and Wilmington Cemetery. Friends and relatives are welcome to attend a memorial open house at his son's home on Tuesday, July 29, beginning at 1 p.m.
