Dorothy Canty Forsberg-Harrington of Waterloo died of natural causes on June 8, 2014. She was born March 15, 1919, in Dallas, Texas. In 1945 she was married to Raymond T. Forsberg, who died in 1985.

Dorothy served in World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy's Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, known by the acronym, WAVES. She served in Washington for the Naval Headquarters in 1945, handling highly classified messages about the war to and from Navy Adm. Ernest J. King, one of only nine 5 star officers in the history of our country. Adm. King served as the ninth chief of naval operations.

Dorothy was a teacher at Logan Junior High School in Waterloo for 21 years. She loved the arts and attended concerts and art shows locally and all over the world. She was also an accomplished artist in her own right as a painter and creative writer.

In 2002, Dorothy was married to Gordon Harrington, her devoted friend and confidant. Together they traveled extensively through Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and both Americas.

She is survived by Gordon, two sons: Bill (Austin, Texas) and Ted (Tucson, Ariz.), two daughters-in-law: Pam and Becky, two grandchildren: Chad and Jenny and four beautiful great grandchildren. Dorothy is also remembered by the many special friends she nurtured and mentored along the way. Her special friend was Deborah Henning.

Memorial Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Black Hawk County, Cedar Falls with military honors. Inurnment at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
