Robert Welch May 10, 1930 - June 25, 2014

Robert "Bob" Welch was born and raised in La Porte City. He attended Waterloo East High School and graduated with a BA degree from Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, and a MA degree from the University of Iowa. He was the director of art for the Muscatine Community Schools for several years until he became interested in the "special child." He was a special education teacher at Crete, Ill., and Thornton Township High School at Harvey, Ill. He taught several adult education classes at the Chicago Teachers College in Illinois. He spent most of his teaching career at Modesto, Calif., as a special education teacher of a variety of classes at Modesto High School where he retired in 1992 and later moved to Las Vegas.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed at Tokyo, Japan, in the Joint Chiefs' of Staff Office-Division 5.

During his lifetime he was awarded many honors, including Local Teacher of the Year and leader of various Masonic organizations in Iowa.

In Modesto he was a Special Education Teacher of the Year by the Exceptional Children's Organization and a past president of Phi Delta Kappa. He was a president of the Las Vegas Rose Garden Club, and the Leader of TOPS NV 00098, Las Vegas, as well as TOPS NV0007, Las Vegas, for several years. He was the Nevada TOPS King in 2006.

He is survived by sisters L. Maxine Weichers, Wanda Hedges and Alice Hamlyn, all of Waterloo; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Sharon Walser (Kurt) of Modesto.

In 2010 he was preceded in death by Emery Fernow, his domestic partner of 34 years; his brother, Wayne Welch; and his sister, Jackie Welch-Myers Nichols.

A ceremonial of life will be held at a later date with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo.
