WATERLOO - James E. “Jim” Burton, 81, of Waterloo, died at home Thursday, July 10, 2014.

He was born June 17, 1933, in Waterloo, son of Carson and Kathryn Faust Burton. He married Virginia Morton on April 12, 1952, at Burton Avenue Baptist Church, Waterloo.

Jim graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1951. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier for 35 years until retiring. He then worked at CBE Group for 18 years. He served as city councilman for the 5th Ward during the Leo Rooff administration; was president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 512; president for the Waterloo Postal Employees Credit Union, member of Masonic Lodge 105; board member for Church Row Neighborhood Association and Pioneer Cemetery Association, and served on the Waterloo Planning and Zoning Commission. He also was involved with the Chevaliers Drum and Bugle Corps in Waterloo.

Survived by wife; two sons, John (Christine) of Denver, Colo., and Timothy (Martha) of Waterloo; a daughter, Susan (David) Schlette of Waterloo; five grandchildren, Anna Burton, Emily (Josh) Cleaver, Jim Schmadeke, and Gabrielle and Jonathan Burton; and a brother, Robert of Bend, Ore.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Ann Burton; and a brother, Harold.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Locke Funeral Home, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
