CEDAR FALLS - Irene Annabelle Nelson Lueders, 89, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at the Methodist Hospital in Minneapolis of natural causes.

She was born Dec. 25, 1915, in Missouri Valley, daughter of Harvey H. and Opal Florence Nelson. She married Ernest J. Lueders July 2, 1942. He died Oct. 5, 1980.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa. She taught in Missouri Valley, Dysart and 26 years of first grade at Hudson Elementary. She was involved in the Cedar Falls Womans Club and was an avid bridge player.

She was the originator of the Hawkeye Adult Literacy Program in 1985 and was the first to be awarded the Governors Volunteer Award in the Hawkeye Adult Literacy Program. She became a trained tutor and then a trainer until 1991.

Survived by two sons, Richard E. (Karen) of Wayzata, Minn., and John T. (Jeanne) of Waterloo; two daughters, Julie A. (Ken) Richardson of Advance, N.C., and Mary F. Lueders of Wayzata; five grandchildren, Drs. Michael and Jennifer Asmus, Kirsten J. Asmus, Jeannette M. Asmus, Matthew J. (Marina) Lueders and Andrew C. Lueders; and two great-grandchildren, Natalie Irene Asmus and Alexis Annabelle Lueders.

Preceded in death by a brother, Don Nelson; and two aunts, Ruby Guyer and Geraldine Moss.

Memorial service will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be directed to the Hawkeye Adult Literacy Program and the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
