[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Wednesday, June 25, 2014]

Douglas Larry Marshall, 73, of Cohasset, Minn., “passed on” after a long battle with cancer on June 23, 2014.

He was born in Waterloo to Larry Marshall and Hazel (Carothers) Marshall Paulus and attended schools in Cedar Falls and Waterloo. Doug was proud to have served in the U.S. Marine Corps (Semper Fi!), but this was not to define him as much as finding and marrying his partner, Virginia (Meyer) Marshall in 1979. On the week of his demise, Virginia and Doug were to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their union.

Before retirement from GAF Corporation in 2000, Doug made his living selling products to building supply companies across northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and part of Montana; he valued the friendships he made through work and play.

Doug’s greatest joy came from sharing outdoor activities with his many dear and lifelong friends. He was especially fond of boating, snowmobiling, and upland game bird hunting. The later always involved his beloved Brittany Spaniels which were a source of great pride and love. Doug had a special place in his heart for all living creatures, and often lamented how great it would be if we “could catch and release pheasants” so that we could share the experience with friends and dogs without having to kill the birds (though we all agreed they were quite tasty). Although he thrived in much of the Minnesota’s north woods, he had an inordinate fondness for the lakes of the Laurentian divide, especially Crane Lake where he and Virginia lived and boated whenever able.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, and his stepfather, Clifford Paulus.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his sons, Brett (Monika) and Scott; his stepdaughter, Lisa Mooty; his sister, Marlys Woock; his ex-wife, Mary Jane (Sanders); and the fellowship of the West Cohasset Chapel.

A gathering of family and friends will be Saturday, June 28, from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service at West Cohasset Chapel, Cohasset, where the Rev. Joe Franzone will officiate. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Cohasset.

Arrangements are with the Rowe Funeral Home and Crematory of Grand Rapids, Minn.
