WATERLOO - Herbert G. Smith, 96, of Waterloo, died Friday, June 6, 2014, at NorthCrest Specialty Care.

He was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Kesley, son of George and Wilhemina “Minnie” De Buhr Smith. He married Loris “Nadine” Wood in 1967 in Waterloo.

Herbert worked at Hinson Manufacturing Co. and then worked for nearly 40 years at Rath Packing Co., retiring in 1979.

Survived by his wife (who later died Sunday, June 8, 2014); two sons, Kevin (Deb) of Denver and Ryan (Stacy) of Waterloo; and five grandchildren, Peyton, Megan, Connor, Alexis and Sterling Smith.

Preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, George, Theodore, John and an infant.

Joint services for Herbert and his wife will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today, and an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.

Herbert was an avid reader, and enjoyed gardening, cars and watching his grandchildren grow up.
